A Davenport mother is being held without bond after it was alleged that she killed her adoptive four-year-old son by hitting him. Patricia Saintizaire, 36, was charged with first-degree murder and made her court appearance on Thursday afternoon.

The 4-year-old Bryan Boyer was adopted by Saintizaire from Haiti approximately a year ago, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The second adoptive 16-year-old son of Saintizaire discovered Boyer in his bed last week, weak and depressed.

The boy started to shake throughout dinner. Saintizaire transported him to a hospital in Haines City after he had puked three times. After being transported to Orlando Health, he passed away.

The sheriff said an autopsy revealed Boyer had a torn liver consistent with a hard strike to the abdomen and had layers of bruises from past beatings.

Jodie Domangue, a child advocate at One More Child in Lakeland, said children aren’t likely to verbalize abuse, so there are nonverbal cues people can look out for.

She said, “That might be a child who’s very tired at school and who has a lot of absences or frequent tardys. Doesn’t have their personal care taken care of. They’re eating at school or showing up with marks or bruises at school.”

She further added, “If you see anything that’s concerning, whether you’re a teacher or community member, you should never hesitate to report that. Cause even a small sign can be something big happening in the home.”

One More Child provides family support, nursing care, and good parenting training in addition to intervention and preventative services. They also issue licenses to foster families, so you might be able to assist in making sure kids have a secure and caring environment.

Next month, Saintizaire will make another court appearance.
