The Lake County School Board has unanimously selected Deputy Superintendent Chad Farnsworth to become the district’s next superintendent, ensuring a smooth leadership transition as Superintendent Diane Kornegay prepares to retire at the conclusion of the 2026-27 school year.
The decision follows a superintendent search launched after Kornegay announced her retirement plans. A veteran educator with more than 35 years in public education and a decade leading Lake County Schools, Kornegay is Florida’s longest-serving appointed superintendent and was recently honored as the Florida Association of District School Superintendents’ 2026 Superintendent of the Year.
The School Board received seven applications during the search process, with two candidates meeting the district’s rigorous qualifications. Board members ultimately chose Farnsworth, citing his extensive experience, proven leadership record, and commitment to continuing the district’s upward trajectory.
Farnsworth has served as Lake County Schools’ deputy superintendent since 2024. Prior to that role, he spent seven years as the district’s assistant superintendent and chief of staff. His leadership experience also includes serving as superintendent of Bradford County Schools from 2012 to 2016, where he improved student achievement, increased graduation rates, elevated the district’s state grade, and guided the district through a significant financial recovery.
The second finalist, Jose Bueno, chief of staff for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, was recognized by board members as a highly qualified candidate with an impressive record of academic improvement and school performance gains. However, board members emphasized their desire for leadership continuity and stability as Lake County Schools continues building on its recent successes.
Under Kornegay’s leadership, Lake County Schools achieved consecutive “A” ratings from the Florida Department of Education in 2025 and 2026 for the first time in district history. Graduation rates have climbed to a record 96 percent, while students have gained expanded access to Career and Technical Education programs, dual enrollment opportunities, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge AICE, and fine arts programs.
Kornegay expressed confidence in Farnsworth’s ability to lead the district into its next chapter.
“I watched the transformational work Chad Farnsworth performed in Bradford County and knew I wanted him as part of my team when I came to Lake County,” Kornegay said. “I have seen firsthand his deep commitment to our students, staff and communities. His willingness to listen, navigate challenges, make difficult decisions, and keep the focus on what is best for students makes him the right leader for this district. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and excited to watch him lead this district I love so much into the future.”
Kornegay will remain with the district through the end of the school year and is expected to transition into the role of Superintendent Emeritus later this year as Farnsworth assumes superintendent responsibilities.
Farnsworth will present his vision and priorities for Lake County Schools during a public workshop at 9:30 am on August 31 at the district office, located at 201 W. Burleigh Blvd. in Tavares.
With a leadership transition focused on continuity, the School Board’s selection signals confidence in maintaining the district’s academic momentum while continuing to expand opportunities for students across Lake County.
