Bob Penny Passed Away on Christmas at the Age of 87

The late actor Bob Penny was well-known for his supporting roles in contemporary classics like “Forrest Gump” and “My Cousin Vinny.” He was 87. According to an internet obituary, the former professor passed away on Christmas Day in Alabama, his native state.

Although the cause of death was not immediately disclosed, Penny had been residing in an assisted care facility, according to the obituary. Dr. Robert “Bob” Lynn Penny, a poet and graduate of Columbia University taught poetry and prose at the University of Alabama in Birmingham for more than 20 years before retiring after 32 years in the classroom.

Beginning in 1987 with “The Verne Miller Story,” he began appearing on both large and small screens. He appeared in “Mississippi Burning,” an Oscar-winning movie nominated for six other prizes, including best picture, the year after.

Many of the movies Penny starred in had Oscar nominations or wins, including best picture for “Forrest Gump,” “My Cousin Vinny,” and “Fried Green Tomatoes,” among others.

The Robert Redford film “The Legend of Bagger Vance” and the Reese Witherspoon movie “Sweet Home Alabama” featured Penny in supporting roles. In addition to a position on “Drop Dead Diva,” he had a seven-episode run on the television version of “In the Heat of the Night.”

He last appeared in a film in 2016, playing Harold in two episodes of Billy Ray Cyrus‘ CMT sitcom “Still the King.” Six nieces, one nephew, his sister, brother, and sister-in-law survive Penny.
