An inquest into the death of a farmer in the south of Scotland has found he was attacked by a cow that had recently given birth. Derek Roan, 71, had attempted to reintroduce a Galloway beef cow and her calf back to the main herd.
In June last year, he was involved in an accident at Barnbaroch Farm near Dalbeattie and suffered fatal chest injuries. According to the investigation by Sheriff Joanna McDonald, Mr. Roan’s death could not have been prevented.
Other than that, there were no problems with the operational systems. A hearing into the investigation into the incident, which took place at a family-owned property, occurred at Dumfries Sheriff Court on 19 June 2022.

He was featured on This Farming Life on BBC Two. He operates not one but two dairy farms and a milk distribution company. As an “experienced rancher,” Mr. Roan would have been “well aware” of the dangers of working with cattle.
He and his wife and two boys worked and lived in Barnbaroch for the rest of their lives. Their primary objective that day was to transfer the mother cow and her newborn calf.

His son saw his father’s quad bike in a field around 16:00 and thought he might be doing some work nearby. About half an hour later, Mr. Roan was discovered suffering facial injuries, and an ambulance was dispatched. Mr. Roan was taken to the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, but his illness could not be saved.
The hearing was told that the seriousness of his wounds meant that finding him sooner would not have significantly affected his chances of survival. His child claimed to investigators that a cow had attacked his father because the animal was afraid of him.
Sheriff McDonald said of Mr. Roan, “a respected member of the farming community locally and nationally.”
Presenting his resolution, he expressed his condolences to their loved ones.
