Gertrude Melba Smith (1920–1976), better known by her stage as Bonnie Davis, and Teddy Hill (1909–1978), a large band leader, were the parents of Moore, who was born Beatrice Melba Hill. Before moving to Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 9, Moore’s mother remarried jazz pianist Clement Leroy Moorman and the family returned to New York City’s Harlem district.
