Progressive Angie Nixon Ready to Take on Republican Senator Ashley Moody in Florida

Progressive Democrat Angie Nixon is ready to take on Republican Senator Ashley Moody after her big win in the Democratic primary over the establishment choice.

State Representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate, defeating heavily funded establishment candidate Alex Vindman in a stunning grassroots victory for progressives. Nixon built a statewide campaign around working people, economic justice, immigrant rights, affordable housing, healthcare, labor rights, public education, and a fundamental belief that government should serve communities and not billionaires and corporations. The Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida endorsed Nixon and declared victory after her success in the primary. Nixon even recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America.

Now she says her campaign is ready to take on the Republicans for control of the Florida Senate seat.

“We won this primary without taking a dime of corporate PAC money. No corporate checks. No billionaire-funded machine,” Nixon wrote supporters after her victory. “And they threw everything they had at us. Ron DeSantis had me censured. I was arrested. I was charged with trespassing and resisting an officer. They tried to intimidate us, silence us, and stop this movement. They failed. Now, we’re taking this fight directly to a DeSantis-appointed rubber stamp for the MAGA agenda — and polls show this race is neck and neck.”

The Democrat admits it is “an upward battle to fight and beat Ashley Moody” and Moody won her Republican primary easily, and with more votes. According to the Florida Department of Election unofficial results, Ashley Moody received 1,320,048 in the Republican primary, and Angie Nixon received 705,192 in the Democratic primary. Overall, 1,659,023 Republicans voted in the primary for U.S. Senate, and 1,257,966 Democrats voted in the primary.

“My opponent will be a self-proclaimed socialist that proudly signed up and joined the Democratic Socialists of America. That will be my opponent,” Republican Senator Ashley Moody said in her primary victory remarks.

She framed this Florida election as bigger than selecting a Senator, but critical to the future of the country because of the extreme differences between the candidates.

“We are staring down crazy in the socialists today,” the Republican said.

The Democratic nominee for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat now has a little more than two months to try and flip the state blue. But the Republican Senator is ready for the contrast between the two campaigns.

“Angie Nixon, who will be my opponent in November, and her comrades want to destroy this country and everything it is built on,” Senator Moody added.

“I will fight back. I will not waiver. I will not bend or become untethered because my roots run deep,” Moody concluded while saying she believes Republicans will win big in November.
