Roald Dahl died of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a rare blood cancer, according to several accounts. MDS is a group of diseases that affect the bone marrow, causing it to create inadequate healthy blood cells.

MDS symptoms include fatigue, weakness, infections, bleeding, and bruising. MDS can progress to AML, a more aggressive kind of blood cancer.  The exact cause of MDS is unknown, although some risk factors include radiation, toxins, or some medications; smoking; old age; and genetic abnormalities.

Although there is no cure for MDS, treatments such as blood transfusions, chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and supportive care can help control symptoms and improve quality of life. Roald Dahl was admitted to a hospital in Oxford, England, on November 12, 1990, with an unexplained infection. He died peacefully in his sleep on November 23, 1990.

He was buried in the grounds of St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England. His family provided him with a “sort of Viking funeral,” according to his granddaughter.

In 1953, Dahl married actress Patricia Neal. During their 30 years of marriage, they had five children: Olivia, Chantal, Theo, Ophelia, and Lucy. When Theo was only a few months old, he was hit by a cab while riding in his baby carriage, and he briefly suffered from hydrocephalus.

Dahl later worked on the WDT valve, which is meant to improve the brain shunt used to treat the disease. A few years later, Dahl’s daughter Olivia died of measles at the age of seven. Later, in 1965, his wife experienced three brain aneurysms, from which she recovered.
