The musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” (GGLAM), which Lutvak co-wrote with Robert L. Freedman, is one of his most notable works. After more than two years on Broadway, this production won the Tony Award for Best Musical and received widespread critical acclaim. He was nominated for a Tony Award because of his outstanding work on the show’s original score.

The death of renowned American musician and lyricist Steven Lutvak, 64, occurred on Monday, October 9, 2023. Born on July 18, 1959, in The Bronx, New York, Lutvak became a prominent personality in the fields of musical theater and movies. His most notable work is the Tony Award–winning musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” which he co-wrote with Robert L. Freedman.

Lutvak’s impressive resume includes scoring multiple films and releasing a solo album, “The Time It Takes.” The Kleban Award for Lyric Writing and the Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting were both presented to him in recognition of his achievements. The Jonathan Larson Grant for Outstanding Achievement in the Theatre was also awarded to him.

Especially for their work together on “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” he and Robert L. Freedman received a number of literary awards. The musical was nominated for a Tony Award for its original score and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics, as well as nominations for Outstanding Music and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score.
