To explain how she created this role from scratch, actor Annaleigh explained, “I had no information to go from because there’s nothing about this woman.” “Therefore, the only things I had to deal with were the situation’s actual conditions and happenings. Making a character who was genuinely human, complex, and still existed in the world of the late 1970s and early 1980s was extremely important to me.
“I also wanted to make sure that the viewer felt extremely authentic about the bond that she had with Kumail [Nanjiani’s] character, [her husband] Steve,” Annaleigh continued. Because, hopefully, if she loves him, so will everyone else. That was significant.
