Smoke engulfed a business district near Fullerton Municipal Airport after a small plane crashed Thursday afternoon, killing two people and injuring 19 others. The crash occurred in the 2300 block of West Raymer Avenue, sending shockwaves among the workers in the vicinity and prompting an immediate response by emergency services.
A Routine Flight Turns Fatal
The aircraft-a home-built Van’s Aircraft RV-10-apparently encountered issues shortly after takeoff. Authorities say the pilot appeared to be attempting a return to the airport when the plane crashed into the roof of a warehouse, killing both people believed to be aboard.
Inside the warehouse, workers were caught off guard by the sudden impact and ensuing fire. Of the 19 injured, 11 required hospitalization, while eight others were treated at the scene. The conditions of those hospitalized remain undisclosed.
Witnesses Describe the Chaos
People who witnessed the explosion near the scene of the blast said they heard a very loud explosion followed by an upsurge of black smoke. Many described it chaotic as workers scampered out of the building with fire rising up. Emergency crews quickly enveloped the warehouse that housed Michael Nicholas Design Factory.
Local police and fire departments coordinated evacuations in the area for the safety of the residents and workers. The Fullerton Police Department asked the public to avoid the area while investigators were assessing the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board took over the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Though preliminary details, in fact, point to possible mechanical failure or pilot error, conclusive findings could take weeks.
This is not the first aviation accident near Fullerton Municipal Airport. In November, another small plane crashed, injuring people with minor injuries when it hit a tree shortly after takeoff. These incidents really drive home the risks of keeping the skies safe next to general aviation airports in densely inhabited areas.
Community Impact and Response
As rescue workers continue to investigate the reasons behind this tragedy, the community is in shock. Local leaders have extended condolences to the families of the victims and support to those who have been affected. Centrally located Fullerton near major freeways and residential neighborhoods makes stringent aviation safety very important.
Further information is available on official channels, residents and businesses should keep tuned for more information as the investigation unfolds.
