Bridgerton’s social season has finally arrived after an 18-month wait. The rake Anthony Bridgerton, who has resolved to settle down with a decent lady, returns in this period drama/fantasy romance. London’s newest arrival, sweet Edwina Sharma, was his choice. Anthony must also win over Edwina’s protective older sister Kate (Simone Ashley) when he begins wooing her. However, it appears that Anthony and Kate have more in common than he thought.
As Edwina, newcomer Charithra Chandran shines as brilliantly as the character she takes on, the Sharma sisters are a welcome addition to the Bridgerton cast. She initially pursued a career in public policy.
Instead of pursuing acting, the 24-year-old Indian-born British actress hoped to pursue a new career path. Following her undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, she had a five-year career plan in public policy in mind. She told Shondaland that, even though she acted in college and even trained with the National Youth Theatre of England, she initially thought of acting as a pastime.
In an interview, she said, “I never thought I’d be an actress.” “I believed it was impossible. When you know something isn’t going to happen, it’s hard to allow oneself to dream about it.”
Her first acting gig came during her gap year when she decided to pursue it more seriously. Even though she’s starring in a Netflix programme that’s no longer as popular as it once was, she says she always has a “backup plan.”

‘Bridgerton’ is her second-ever TV role.
In 2020, Chandran was cast as Sabina Pleasance, the teen spy’s best friend, in the Amazon Prime Video series Alex Rider. In addition to Bridgerton, she’s appeared in a few shorts and the indie film Class S. Pillow Talk is an animated web series she’s currently working on.

Ahead of the first season of Bridgerton airing in November of 2020, Chandran shared her audition process with Shondaland. First, the historical drama enthusiast tried out for Kate, the eldest sister. “Several auditions later, I realised it wasn’t the right fit. And that was fine, too, thank you very much. I’d already received a second TV show offer by that time. This year’s beginning, I was of the mindset that one door had closed and another had opened. It wasn’t meant to happen. So what?”
In February of the following year, Chandran was already working on a different show when she received a call from the show’s producers asking her to audition for Edwina. This is a “coming-of-age story,” she says, and it took her some time to realise she could make a difference with the character and the plot.
“Self-discovery and self-love are the driving forces behind her transformation from an insecure teen to the confident young woman she is today. There is a lot of pressure on women in particular to be selfless, and Edwina certainly lives up to that expectation. She thinks the world would be a better place if more people were like Edwina.
Chandran revealed in an interview with The Kit that she is “very independent and autonomous in real life” compared to her charming and shy character. She first had difficulty empathising with Edwina, but after talking with the show’s writers and compiling a playlist charting Edwina’s development, she began to feel more at ease with the character.
She stated this to the media outlet, “Now that I’ve had the opportunity to portray her, I’m very fond of her because she embodies so many virtues that are often undervalued in our culture. Choosing to trust people, which some could regard as naivete or immaturity, is a decision she makes to see the good in others. Edwina is an example of someone who has the ability to make everyone around them feel better about themselves.”
With a resume that includes Bollywood dancing and field hockey experience, Chandran is described as a “super-athlete” by her agency. Her pre-Bridgerton Instagram feed is also full of nice family photos, dining selfies, and travels with pals. In fact, there’s even a picture from the pandemic-era when she was attempting to become Martha Stewart’s successor.

She’s proud of her Tamil heritage.
Even though Edwina’s family was originally named the Sheffields, British-Indian actresses Simone Ashley, Shelley Conn, and Chandran were cast to depict the women who brought traditional Indian rituals to Regency-era London.
Shondaland learned how important Chandran’s Tamil ancestry is to her. “Tamil Nadu is the southernmost state in India, and I’m from there. In contrast to the Indo-Aryan peoples, we are Dravidians. Sanskrit is not the source of our Tamil language, which is as old as Sanskrit.
