In 2007, when Rainey was a true Gator freshman, he sustained a shoulder injury after just four games. As a result, the Florida Gators decided to sit him out his first year. He played a pivotal role on Meyer’s 2008 SEC championship team and helped the team win the 2009 National Championship Game against Oklahoma.

Chris Rainey, however, had a rough season in 2010. Police said he sent his ex-girlfriend, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship for years, threatening texts and was detained for aggravated stalking.

Reports state that Alachua County Judge Denise Ferrero issued a summons to Chris Rainey. After the hearing, he was given a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and told not to contact the lady. As a result of his arrest, he was also taken off the team’s active roster. Urban Meyer made the following statements to the media at his news conference:

“There will be a further evlauation as we go. The immedicacy of it is that he’s not with our team.”

Meyer banned Chris Rainey for the next five games after commenting, but he returned to play in the season’s last game, a 34-31 overtime victory against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Troubles followed Chris Rainey to the NFL

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected the running back with the 159th overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft. However, after being arrested again, the squad quickly freed him. Rainey’s ex-girlfriend claims he physically assaulted her and filed violence charges against him.

The Gainesville Police Department reported the event and issued a news release. According to their statement, Several eyewitnesses observed Rainey hitting his ex-girlfriend in his roommate’s vehicle. Because of this, the victim got out of the car and fled. When Chris Rainey realized his ex-girlfriend had his phone in her purse, he gave pursuit. He grabbed her purse, and they both tripped and collapsed.

Steelers announced they waived RB Chris Rainey following his arrest for a domestic battery incident this morning in Gainesville, Fla.

The Steelers could take no more of this and decided to let Rainey loose. After a year with the Indianapolis Colts and another with the Arizona Cardinals, he retired from the National Football League. Later, he played in Canada’s professional football league, the CFL.

In 2021, Chris Rainey’s last season with the BC Lions ended on the football field. But since they did not come up with an extension offer, he is now a free agent and looking for a new club.
