The medical examiner found on Thursday that the twin brother and sister’s deaths were intentional and caused by suffocation, according to reports from the New York Daily News, WABC, and Fox 5.
The kids, whose names have not been made public because of their age, were sick the days before they died and didn’t go to school, according to WABC and WPIX.
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told in December that the boy had been kept home since November 30 because he was throwing up and seemed to have a cold. He said that his sister was also throwing up and had an ear infection.
An NYPD news release received by news outlets states that the children’s mother found them throwing up in bed on the morning of December 18, 2023.
The mother told the Daily News and WCBS-TV that she last saw her children living at 5 a.m., but she didn’t call 911 until around 11 a.m. when she found them desperately sick. From NBC New York and the New York Post, we know that police found the kids in bed, foaming at the mouth and nose.
She said she did CPR until the paramedics got there. People at the scene said the children were dead. Chief of Detectives for the NYPD Joseph Kenny told reporters after the deaths that the situation “appears to be a medical tragedy,” but that autopsy reports are still being made.
The mother was taken to a nearby hospital because she was distressed. Police say that the father, who was at work at the time, has been helping them.
It didn’t look like either child had been hurt, and cops said they didn’t find any drugs in the house. Carbon monoxide poisoning also didn’t seem to play a part.
WABC reports that the parents came from Ghana. Police say the mother slept in her bed with the kids. The father works as a home health attendant, according to the news source.
