Officials stated that he “looked to be unresponsive” when he was lying on his bed. Additionally, the correctional officer attempted to call out Davis but got no response.

After entering his cell, the officer attempted to wake him up but discovered he was unconscious and not breathing. Officials stated that although medical staff participated in the response and attempted CPR, they were unable to bring him back to life. Soon later, he was declared dead.

According to the sheriff’s office, Davis was serving a 60-day jail sentence after entering a guilty plea to operating a vehicle while his driver’s license was revoked.

According to officials, he was alone in his cell and “did not appear in distress” on rounds at least half an hour prior to the incident. Davis’s body showed no signs of unusual marks or bruises, although he did have underlying medical issues.

Following an autopsy on Friday, the Lake County Coroner’s Office reported that there was no indication of “significant trauma or injuries.” Results from toxicology and additional medical testing are still awaited.
