Ex-walk-on running back Gleaton Jones has been fighting for his life after a terrible car accident on December 10; he was on a hunting trip in St. George Island, Florida, at the time. Jones suffered a bad brain injury and went into emergency surgery to relieve swelling. He currently remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Jones came to Georgia Bulldog Football after an acclaimed high school career at the Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany, Ga. He made All-State, All-Region, and All-Albany during his high school days. He was a freshman walk-on during the historic 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship season – the first time in program history.
Athletic and Scholarly Well Rounded
In addition to the football field, Jones was a jack-of-all-trades. He ran track and played basketball in high school while keeping his academics at a top level. He earned Presidential Honors in the classroom, an indication he put as much hard work into the classroom as he did on the field. The efforts in the classroom set up a transition into the University of Georgia with a positive impression as both an athlete and student.
The tragedy that occurred in the most unexpected way has sent shockwaves through both the football fraternity in Georgia and Jones’s hometown of Albany, Georgia. Supporters from everywhere have joined hands to show their concern and offer prayers for his recovery.
Community Support and Outreach
The Porterfield Methodist Church was one of the most readily available focal points for community support, a place where the Jones family has been very active. It held a prayer service on December 11, which was very well attended by family, friends, and other supporters. Its sanctuary was also opened up for private prayers, serving to provide a space for reflection in this trying time.
Meanwhile, social media has been filled with messages of support from Georgia fans, former teammates, and the Albany community. Many have posted heartfelt messages speaking to the sense of camaraderie surrounding Jones and his family. A few have asked how they can help defray the family’s medical expenses.
Porterfield Methodist Church supports the coordination of financial support. It has thus set up a contact point with people who want to support the family of Jones during this distressing situation. Updates regarding the condition of Jones have been given every now and then as the community remains cautious and concerned.
Although the road to recovery is still unclear for Gleaton Jones, this outpour of love underscores his impact on the people. The same energy in unbroken solidarity moves forward into a plea from all fans, friends, and loved ones alike for him to recover, though he will remain under care.
