How Far Left Is Tiffany Moore Russell? Orlando’s Socialist Surge Raises Questions for Orange County

The Democratic Socialists of America are no longer some distant political curiosity confined to Brooklyn coffee shops and college campuses. They are organizing in Florida, winning elections and attempting to move Democratic politics decidedly to the left.

That makes a straightforward question increasingly relevant in the race for Orange County mayor: Where does Tiffany Moore Russell fit into Orlando’s increasingly progressive political ecosystem?

There is an important distinction at the outset. A review of publicly available information found no reliable evidence that Moore Russell is herself a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Any claim that she is a DSA member would therefore go beyond the available facts.

But voters should not stop asking questions there.

The Orlando chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America openly declares that its objective is the transition to what it calls a “democratic and socialist society,” with economic resources and production placed under democratic and social control. The organization says it wants to build a socialist presence within the broader Democratic left.

And socialist politics in Florida just received a significant boost. State Rep. Angie Nixon won Florida’s 2026 Democratic U.S. Senate primary, becoming the first DSA member to win a major-party nomination for statewide office, according to Axios.

That is no longer theoretical politics. It is electoral politics.

Moore Russell, meanwhile, is hardly a political newcomer. She has served as an Orange County commissioner and Orange County clerk of courts and is now seeking the county mayor’s office. Her campaign describes her candidacy in terms of accessibility, economic opportunity and government responsiveness.

She also recently described herself as a “pragmatic leader” driven by data and deliberate decision-making—language considerably more moderate than anything found in the Orlando DSA manifesto.

So the legitimate issue isn’t whether somebody can simply paste a socialist label on Moore Russell.

The better question is whether she will draw a line between her administration and the increasingly powerful socialist wing of Democratic politics.

That distinction matters because the DSA isn’t coy about its objectives. Orlando DSA says it ultimately seeks a society in which the “means & resources of production are democratically and socially controlled.”

Orange County voters – particularly small-business owners, homeowners and taxpayers – are entitled to know whether their next mayor considers that philosophy compatible with the county’s economic future.

Moore Russell should therefore be asked directly: Does she support the Democratic Socialists of America’s economic agenda? Would she accept DSA support or endorsements? Does she support government ownership of businesses or industries? Where does she disagree with Orlando DSA?

Those are fair questions, especially as socialist candidates demonstrate that DSA politics can win Democratic primaries in Florida.

Moore Russell may answer them by rejecting socialism outright. If so, voters deserve to hear her say it.

But silence shouldn’t be substituted for an answer.

The political ground beneath Florida Democrats is moving. Angie Nixon’s victory proves it. Orlando DSA openly says where it wants that movement to lead.

Now Tiffany Moore Russell should tell Orange County voters exactly where she intends to stand.
