What began as an ordinary day at Atkins Elementary School turned into a moment of heroism when P.E. teacher Emiliano Torres saved a 6-year-old student, Payton Sisco, after she collapsed during gym class on December 4.
Payton was jogging during class when she suddenly collapsed, alarming Torres. “Her eyes rolled back, and it looked like she was convulsing,” he said, describing the harrowing scene. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Torres noted that her breathing had stopped, and her face was turning purple.
Without hesitation, Torres used his CPR training to administer life-saving compressions. “It was terrifying,” Torres admitted, “but I knew I had to act fast. My training just kicked in, and every second mattered.”
A Mother’s Rush to the Scene
Payton’s mother, Meghan Sisco, who works at the same school, was nearby when the incident occurred. Hearing the distress call over the school’s radio, she rushed to the gym, fearing the worst.
By the time Meghan arrived, Payton was beginning to regain consciousness thanks to Torres’ efforts. “I was so relieved to see her wake up,” Meghan said. Despite extensive medical tests, doctors have not identified the cause of the incident. However, they confirmed that Payton is healthy and has since returned to school.
A Special Connection
Although Payton doesn’t remember the event, the experience has created a strong bond between her and Torres. “Every morning, she comes in with high fives and hugs for me,” Torres shared, smiling.
A Call for CPR Training in Schools
The life-saving incident underscores the importance of CPR training, and Meghan is now advocating for more teachers to be certified. “You never know when you’ll need it,” she said.
Principal Kimberly Ellison also praised Torres’ quick response and the collaborative efforts of the staff. “In times of crisis, our school community truly shines,” Ellison said. “Coach Torres demonstrated bravery and quick thinking, which not only saved a life but inspired all of us to be prepared for emergencies.”
Ellison expressed her commitment to ensuring that all teachers at Atkins Elementary are equipped with CPR training.
Inspiring Action
This remarkable story is a testament to the critical role educators play, not just in the classroom but in safeguarding the lives of their students. Thanks to Torres’ swift actions and preparedness, a tragedy was averted, leaving the community grateful and inspired.
For Payton and her family, the incident has highlighted the value of being prepared for the unexpected. As Torres humbly reflected, “I was just doing what anyone would do – using the skills I’ve been trained to use.”
