Roberto Patino, the show’s executive producer, says there will be plenty of material for the second season of DMZ. DMZ is a television miniseries based on the Vertigo comic book series of the same name that is currently available on HBO Max. As depicted in the DMZ comics by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli, the Second American Civil War has turned Manhattan into a demilitarized zone (or DMZ). The first four episodes of DMZ aired on March 17th on HBO Max.
Although Patino was inspired by the comic book series, DMZ tells a unique story set in the world of Brook and Burchielli.
Actress Rosario Dawson portrays Alma “Zee” Ortega, who entered the DMZ eight years ago to find her son, but instead became a beacon of hope for the people of Manhattan. Benjamin Bratt, Freddy Miyares, Hoon Lee, and Jordan Preston Carter also star in the miniseries as Zee’s ex-boyfriend Parco Delgado and his assassin Skel, as well as Wilson Lin, the leader of Chinatown, and Odi, an orphaned kid who befriends Zee. The miniseries is directed by Ava Duvernay (When They See Us) and Ernest Dickinson (The Wire).
Roberto Patino recently spoke about DMZ’s story and the possibility of a DMZ season 2 in an interview. Patino confirmed to Bleeding Cool that future seasons of the show could take place in the demilitarized zone. There are so many fantastic characters to explore in the comics world, according to the showrunner of the miniseries, and the miniseries format is ideal for doing so. Patino’s full thoughts on the upcoming seasons can be found at the bottom of this page:
“There’s absolutely room for expansion. I had conversations in passing about [how] the DMZ is a huge world. It’s a world that’s predicated on either self-reclamation or reinvention itself, which means that it’s full of incredible characters. I think, in any case, the limited series is sort of four-hour movie experience is the right format for any of these other stories and I have plenty of stories to tell about the DMZ. The answer is ‘absolutely.’ There’s the good fortune to continue to live in the DMZ.”
In spite of the fact that the HBO Max miniseries DMZ doesn’t exactly follow the comics’ storylines, it still carries on the comics’ themes. In Zee’s portrayal, this is more apparent than anywhere else. Zee is Matthew Roth’s love interest and moral compass in the comics, but in Patino’s adaptation, she is the moral heart of the DMZ despite the omission of Matthew.
Patino’s interview response suggests that he may treat other characters in future seasons the same way he treated Zee. To better understand the characters and the complex web of relationships that binds Manhattan, DMZ could delve into the past and present circumstances of a variety of individuals.
Wrap- Up Lines
There has been no official word from Patino or HBO on DMZ season 2, despite the showrunner’s teases about future seasons. But with mixed reviews and the marketing of the show as a miniseries, Patino’s words seem to indicate that the show will continue. Even so, HBO Max hasn’t yet decided whether or not to cancel DMZ, so fans can still hold out hope that Patino will get to continue the show.
