Will McCormack and Michael Govier collaborated on the script and animation for their short film If Anything Happens I Love You. The storey revolves on the grief of two parents who have lost their daughter in a school shooting. The movie was published on Netflix on November 20, 2020, by Gilbert Films and Oh Good Productions.
A chance meeting between McCormack and Govier in Griffith Park served as the inspiration for the film. After that, the two spent a year working on the film’s narrative, with Youngran Nho serving as the film’s animation director and production beginning in 2018. After months of hard work, Father and Daughter was completed in February with the aid of Every Town for Gun Safety.
While I Love You debuted in a private screening in Beverly Hills sponsored by Jayme Lemons, Chelsea Handler, Phil Johnston and others at the United Talent Agency in Beverly Hills on March 4, 2020, even if anything happens. After its Netflix release, the short film received critical praise and won the Best Animated Short Film Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards.
Do You Know What The Storyline Is In This Movie?
A teenage daughter’s death causes a rift between two parents. Despite their reluctance to communicate face-to-face, both parents are watched over by shadows that mirror their true feelings.
While the father is out in the yard, the mother considers going into her daughter’s old room, but she is prevented by profound grief and sorrow.
The mother breaks down in tears after finding that she has washed her daughter’s clothing. This causes a soccer ball to fall to the ground and open her daughter’s room, as well as a record player that is playing “1950.” When the mother enters the room, she reunites with her husband.
As “1950” plays in the background, a silhouette of their daughter emerges from the record player, compelling her parents to recall incidents from her life.
In a series of flashbacks, the parents watch their daughter grow up as she discovers a love for soccer, celebrates her tenth birthday, and has her first kiss.
In the last flashback, the young lady abandons her home and family in order to attend school. While the parents’ shadows try to keep her out of their house, they fail since it’s a reminiscence and they know what’s going to happen. After being shot and died inside the school during a shooting, the daughter texted her parents one last time: “If anything happens, I love you.”
They grow apart as the shadow of their daughter pushes them closer together, reminding them of the great moments they had with their daughter when she was alive.
The daughter’s shadow evolves into a bright light between the shadows of her heartbroken parents in the present.
I Love You: Is This Based on a True Event?
If anything happens, I love you is based on real-life experiences. However, the storey isn’t focused on a single household. While filming, Will McCormack and Michael Govier saw several parents whose children had died as a consequence of gun violence in schools.
In an effort to pay tribute to their courage and acknowledge their hardships. Every Community for Gun Safety, a non-profit organisation devoted to gun legislation and the prevention of gun violence, engaged closely with them as well.
Awed by the organization’s efforts, the duo entrusted the script to them before animators ever began work on the film, and they also got to watch the finished product for comments before it was released.
This is the exact same thing that happened last year in Parkland, Florida, when students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sent their parents goodbye SMS. The incident claimed the lives of seventeen persons in all.
The film examines the impact that losing a loved one has on the others who remain in their lives. Couples who have lost a child are more likely to feel emotional estrangement and conflict, according to study.
Everyone has been affected by death in some way, whether directly or indirectly. It was Govier’s goal to underline the significance of hope in the film since it is a critical component of resilience and how we progress in life.
Reminiscing about their daughter’s childhood, the parents picture what life would be like for her when she grows up. Because of their shared history, they are able to unite once more.
There have been several works of art and entertainment addressing the issue of gun violence in the United States throughout the years. ‘This is America’ by Donald Glover focuses on the subject in a music video.
School shootings have been included in a few episodes of ‘One Tree Hill,’ “Glee,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” A final text message from the daughter to her mother reads, “If anything happens, I love you,” in this film.
It will be more difficult for the couple to re-establish their connection if their kid was the glue that kept them together. This video begins by showing how the shadows of parents indicate something other than what they are doing.
Shadows seem to be squabbling despite the darkness and silence, suggesting the two have been through something horrific. By the end of the movie, the parents have come to terms with the tragedy and are trying to mend their relationship. An illuminated figure in the likeness of their daughter appears in between their shadows in the dramatic concluding image.
