Inside, in the “thermal cradle” of the church-specifically designed to protect abandoned babies before they can safely be retrieved-the body of the infant was found. It had not activated the system, which was supposed to notify the parish priest, Father Antonio Ruccia. The police in Bari have initiated an investigation to ascertain if the baby was already dead before he was put inside the cradle. After a similar tragedy in 2015-a newborn was found dead on a nearby beach-the San Giovanni Battista Church installed its baby box: an initiative to help avoid such tragedies, giving desperate mothers another option to leave their children safely.
