According to a news release issued by the New York State Police on Monday, June 27, Mara’s body was found by emergency responders in Cape Vincent, New York on Sunday morning about 8:10 a.m. ET. The St. Lawrence River drains into Lake Ontario, thus state police, firefighters, and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene after reports of a probable drowning.

The police claimed in their statement that there were no indications of foul play and that the body had been taken to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy is currently being performed to identify the official cause of death, although early evidence suggests that Mara drowned while swimming in the river near the U.S./Canadian border.

Mara’s death was verified by her manager, Craig Dorfman. Dorfman said in a statement to Us Weekly on Monday, “Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met.” It was in 1992 that I first saw her perform, in the Off-Broadway production of Mad Forest.
