New York State Police have arrested a 62-year-old man from Cobleskill, charging him with 3rd and 5th degree arson. The arrest follows an investigation into a suspicious vehicle fire that occurred on January 17, 2025, in Sharon, New York.
Troopers responded to a report of the fire at approximately 1:17 PM on Slate Hill Road. After investigating, authorities determined that the man allegedly traveled to the location and intentionally set fire to a vehicle that did not belong to him. The motive behind the arson and whether the suspect had any connection to the vehicle’s owner remains unclear.
The man was arrested at his home, processed, and then taken to the Schoharie County Correctional Facility, where he is awaiting arraignment. State Police were assisted in the investigation by the Schoharie County Fire Investigation Team and the Sharon Springs Fire Department.
Arson is considered a serious crime with significant penalties. New York State has one of the lowest rates of arson cases in the country, with only 3.3 incidents per 100,000 residents between 2017 and 2021, according to reports.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release further details about the case.
