Robert A. Balko Obituary

Robert A. Balko, aged 84, passed away on September 1, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, following a recent injury. He was born on May 15, 1939, in Saginaw, Mich., to parents Robert and Norma (Bigger) Balko. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Larry (Bugsy) Balko, a grandson named Briar Hummel, two nieces, Jennifer and Leann, and a nephew, Gary.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 9, 2023, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forest, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Kenneth Zitsch officiating. Following the service, there will be a Celebration of Life at the church recreation hall. The graveside interment will be a private family gathering.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 3495 Winburne Munson Road, Morrisdale, PA 16858. Arrangements are under the care of Strange and Weaver Funeral Service in Morrisdale.

Family and Survivors

Surviving him are his brother, Theodore (Ted) Balko, sister Myrna Conklin, and his ex-wife, Florence Preece (Smeal), with whom he had four daughters: Bobbi (Ed) Yarger, Bonnie (Randy) Hutton, Sondra McQuillen, and Roni (Andrew) Hummel.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Erika, Jawna, Tori, Jordan, Kurt, Clayton, and Dennis, as well as nine great-grandchildren: Ryan, Breanna, Alayna, Haydn, Hannah, Avery, Carson, Briar, and Cassidy, and two great-great-grandchildren: Ryeker and Finnan. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Beverly Lashinsky (Potts).

Bob graduated from Cooper Township High School in 1958 and held various jobs before retiring from CCor in 1991. He took great pride in his service as a U.S. Navy veteran. Bob enjoyed family gatherings, sports, and offering advice and guidance to those he cared about.
