“Spider Man No Way Home” is the unstoppable movie office juggernaut.
To date, every weekend but one has seen the comic book adventure, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s beloved adolescent webslinger, take top honours at the domestic box office. A calm January at the box office has come to an end with “No Way Home” once again taking the top place in its seventh weekend of release, beating out holdovers like “Scream” and “Sing 2.”
At 3,675 locations in North America, Sony’s superhero sequel brought in $11 million over the weekend, which was down only 17 percent from its earlier outing. Spidey’s newest adventures now have a domestic box office total of $735 million, keeping it as the fourth-highest earning title in history.
Only $25 million separates “No Way Home” from being the third-highest grossing film of all time, behind “Avatar” ($760 million) (not adjusted for inflation). It would be practically impossible for any other pandemic-era film to generate another $25 million in ticket sales given the movie has been in theatres for over two months. At one time, it seemed improbable that “Spider-Man” would be able to hit those exact box office heights.
As the preceding several weeks have shown, “No Way Home” is nothing like any other film. Arachnids over the world would murder for its legs. In other words, James Cameron’s landmark 2009 sci-fi epic may soon be bumped from bronze to silver.
But do not be alarmed, Na’vi people! With a worldwide gross of $2.802 billion, “Avatar” will comfortably preserve its all-time global box office record.
A senior media analyst with Comscore believes that “No Way Home” will exceed the North American box office total of “Avatar” to become the third most earning picture of all time.
When it comes to North American box office success, nothing short of a miracle would be required to overtake “Avengers: Endgame” ($858 million) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million). In the grand scheme of things, third place isn’t too awful.
In terms of global box office, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” joined a limited group of films that have made over $1 billion. What’s more, it achieved this milestone without ever being shown in China, the world’s largest cinema audience. With $1.74 billion worldwide, “No Way Home” has become the sixth most grossing film of all time.
No new statewide releases helped “Scream” regain its previous position as the number-two domestic box office draw. Between Friday and Sunday, Paramount Pictures’ s slasher “requel” took in $7.3 million from 3,518 venues, a 40% decrease from the previous weekend. It brings the North American total to $62.1 million, which is quite a bit considering that the film only cost $25 million to make.
On 3,450 theatres, “Sing 2” debuted at No. 3 with a total of $4.8 million in ticket sales. Since its release around Christmas, the animated sequel has grossed $134.5 million, making it the highest-grossing animated picture of the current epidemic period.
With $1.85 million from 1,963 theatres, the faith-based love drama “Redeeming Love” took fourth place. With only $6.5 million in revenue, it was the worst-performing show of this year’s season. As long as Universal is merely releasing this picture, they are out of the production costs.
To finish out the top five, Disney and 20th Century Fox’s “The King’s Man” took in $1.8 million from 2,440 locations during the weekend. “Kingsman” prequel made $34 million in North America and $114.4 million throughout the world after six weeks of release.
Movie theatre owners are hoping that non-comic book tentpoles will help them sell tickets in the coming weeks after a month with few fresh releases. This month’s calendar includes “Moonfall” from Lionsgate, the mystery “Death on the Nile” from Disney and 20th Century Fox, and “Uncharted” from Sony Pictures, all of which will be released on February 4. When Warner Bros. Pictures releases Robert Pattinson’s “The Batman” on March 4, the world will have a new super-hero to look forward to. Activate the Bat-Signal and you’re good to go.
