Violence in Eastern Congo Rises
The United Nations has raised alarms about the growing violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The M23 armed group has moved deeper into the country, taking control of more areas, including most of the city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. This marks a dangerous turn in a region that has been dealing with conflict for many years.
M23 Rebels Advancing South
The UN is worried that the M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, are pushing south towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province. The violence has caused great harm to civilians, with bombs hitting areas where internally displaced people (IDPs) have taken shelter, leading to casualties.
Summary Executions and Forced Labor
The UN has also reported that the M23 rebels have carried out summary executions of at least 12 people between January 26 and 28. In areas under their control, they have forced people out of camps, occupied schools and hospitals, and made civilians do forced labor and join their forces.
Sexual Violence and Rapes
There have also been many reports of sexual violence. The UN confirmed that Congolese soldiers, along with allied groups, have been involved in rapes in South Kivu, with at least 52 women being raped, including cases of gang rape. There are also reports that over 160 women were raped by male prisoners when a prison in Goma was attacked by M23 on January 27.
Rising Concern Over Sexual Violence
Volker Turk, the UN rights chief, said that the recent violence increases the risk of more sexual abuse in the region. The widespread availability of weapons in Goma is making the situation worse, and the UN is calling for investigations and justice for the victims.
Displaced People at Greater Risk
Ruth Maclean from the New York Times shared that many displaced people from the countryside are seeking safety in Goma. But they are living in open areas, making them more vulnerable to attacks and abuse.
Rwanda’s Role in the Conflict
The UN, along with several Western governments and the DRC, accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels. It is believed that Rwanda wants to control the resources in eastern DRC, which is rich in valuable minerals. The situation is worsening and affecting not only the DRC but also surrounding countries.
