Harwell’s health has deteriorated rapidly since he became 56 years old, and his remaining time is likely to be short. His fiancee has been by his side during this really difficult period. Harwell’s management did not provide any further details about his health out of respect for him and his loved ones.

Harwell’s contributions to Smash Mouth as a leader and original band member are well-praised. Two of the group’s hits, “All-Star” and “I’m a Believer,” were international smashes and propelled them to prominence.

Health Concerns for Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell

Retired musician Steve Harwell, well known as the longtime lead singer of Smash Mouth, is now receiving hospice care at home. After obtaining medical care, EW is able to ascertain that Harwell is in his latter stages of liver failure. As the band’s spokesman also verified, Harwell has returned home with “only a week or so to live,” and his loved ones have been coming to visit him for the last three days.

“We hope that people respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time,” the official said.

In August 2016, Harwell was transported to the hospital after falling after a performance in Urbana, Illinois. Due to Harwell’s heart condition, the Smash Mouth had to postpone a number of shows in 2017.

The lead singer of the San Jose, California rock band, who had singles including “All-Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun” in the ’90s, retired in 2021 due to health problems. The band’s new lead vocalist is Zach Goode, previously of Ghoulspoon, Divided By Zero, and The Secret Seven.

Harwell has had a string of medical setbacks since his diagnosis of cardiomyopathy a decade ago, including heart failure and acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy, which affects motor abilities including speech and memory. The musician has also had problems with alcoholism in the past.

The contentious performance in upstate New York led to Harwell’s resignation. The internet was flooded with videos of Harwell slurring his words and making ominous noises towards the crowd.

I hold no ill will towards Steve Harwell or Smash Mouth in general but this vid perfectly describes what happened when I saw them in concert in 2015. A concert that to this day, I describe as The Worst concert I ever been to. https://t.co/JmE2nw5KyD

According to a person close to the issue, Harwell “forgot where he was [and] his own lyrics and had limited understanding of his environment due to one of his episodes.” They continued by saying the audio is “unfortunate” and not representative of who he is. A few days after the event, Harwell made his retirement announcement.

“Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream,” the singer said in a statement. “To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.”

Harwell continued, “To our loyal and amazing fans, thank you, all of this was possible because of you. I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn’t able to.”
