The recent film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald seemed to toss out everything moviegoers understood about the history of the Harry Potter universe and created chaos as a result. There are still many canonical issues, but The Secrets of Dumbledore makes an attempt to right some wrongs by finally answering questions that fans have been asking, such as the background of Credence (Ezra Miller) and Queenie (Alison Sudol) and the identity of the Jessica Williams character we saw instructing Nicolas Flamel in the previous film.
But despite its great improvements over its predecessor, this film’s story is still chaotic and overloaded with material that may or may not be relevant to the plot. To fill in the plot holes left by the preceding picture, instead of just going forward with the story, the film repeatedly recaps that film.
Dumbledore’s screenplay, written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, is simply too much to grasp in the first two acts and will have even the most informed Potter fans scratching their heads a bit. David Yates’ directing of the picture is similarly all over the place, albeit finally settling down by the third act, which closes with a satisfactory climax.

Fantastic Beasts 3 Storyline
In Bhutan in 1932, Newt Scamander assists a Qilin — a mystical creature who can see into one’s soul as well as the future — give birth. Gellert Grindelwald’s acolytes, led by Credence Barebone, attack and kill the mother, and abduct the child.
Grindelwald subsequently kills the creature to utilize its talent of precognition. They don’t aware that the Qilin has given birth to twins, one of whom Newt is able to save thanks to his quick thinking.
Unable to battle against Grindelwald owing to a blood bond, Albus Dumbledore recruits Newt, his brother Theseus, Ilvermorny Charms Professor Eulalie “Lally” Hicks, Senegalese-French wizard Yusuf Kama, and American No-Maj Jacob Kowalski to prevent Grindelwald’s scheme for world domination. Only Yusuf Kama is identified as a member of Grindelwald’s inner circle and taken to Germany, where the rest of the group is held captive.
It is at this point that the group witnesses Grindelwald being cleared of all accusations by the International Confederation of Wizards (ICW). The ICW believes arresting Grindelwald could garner him more support but beating him in a legitimate election will lose him support.
Grindelwald’s acolytes, who have undermined the German Ministry of Magic, arrest Theseus and plan to assassinate one of Grindelwald’s challengers, the Brazilian contender, Vicência Santos. Dumbledore assigns Newt and Lally their next assignments: to rescue Theseus and thwart the assassination.
While Newt rescues his brother from the secret German wizarding prison, Lally and Jacob thwart the assassination attempt; however, Jacob is subsequently framed for attempting to kill Grindelwald and he and Lally barely escape, giving Grindelwald an incentive to turn the Wizarding world against the Muggle world.
Meanwhile, Grindelwald has sent Credence to assassinate Dumbledore. Dumbledore soon beats Credence and he is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Dumbledore’s younger brother, Aberforth. Credence’s allegiance to Grindelwald is tested when he discovers his father’s identity and is savaged by Albus Dumbledore.

At this moment, it feels like the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series is one horrible on-set mishap away from being included in a future season of Shudder’s Cursed Films series. What once seemed to be a promising quintology (good lord) exploring the history of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World through the misadventures of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), magical zoologist and close confidant of Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) as a form of fascism rises through the land of Wizards and Witches right about the same time the Weimar Republic was starting to groan and burst at the seams.
It had lots of things going for it — the return of director David Yates, who had guided the Harry Potter series to its well-received conclusion, an exciting new setting, a well-rounded cast who were mostly plucked from 2014’s list of Oscar nominees, and the full financial backing of Warner Bros. — but there were signs early on that things were going to be rough.
There were mixed reviews for the first film, but it wasn’t until between that and the sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, that the issue became truly serious when Rowling began to reveal her true identity and nearly eclipsed the legal troubles affecting Johnny Depp, the franchise’s main bad (indeed, He Who Shall Be Named in the Title of That Film).
Everything went wrong with Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which many expected to be a “return to form” or something along those lines. COVID, for example, delayed the film for over a year, but many of the production’s own problems were also to blame: Depp was quickly fired and replaced by Mads Mikkelsen (a net improvement, given that he’s one of three people on screen ever having any fun with the material), Rowling’s continued estrangement from her fanbase and the company as the result of her increase on her beliefs, the off-screen issues facing series player Ezra Mil. But I’m sure I’m forgetting something, so you get the gist.

However, it appears that not all film franchisees are reaping the benefits of the return of moviegoers following a time of COVID limitations. A record-low opening weekend for a Wizarding World picture is predicted for “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the next in Warner Bros.’ prequel trilogy to the “Harry Potter” franchise.
Not the worst opening weekend for a 2022 cinema release, but a bad start for an anticipated film franchise. Production delays and safety concerns associated with COVID have pushed the “Secrets of Dumbledore” budget up to a whopping $200 million. If Warner Bros. is going to make the wizarding sequel a success, they’ll have to target overseas audiences.
