After Taylor Swift was charged with promoting “fatphobia,” the music video for her song Anti-Hero was altered. The term “fat” was used in one clip from the video, which has now been changed.
The video’s writer and director, Taylor, was pictured in the original version stepping onto a bathroom scale whose dial spun to reveal the word. Swift is shown getting a disapproving glance and a head shake from a doppelganger standing next to her in the modified version of the video that can be found on YouTube and Apple Music.
After certain fans and public figures said the sequence promoted “fatphobia,” the scene was changed. “By having the word ‘fat’ show on the scale, she made a choice to explicitly define her demon, the fear of being branded fat, which is fatphobia in its most literal meaning,” said Teen Vogue writer Catherine Mhloyi after calling the clip “lazy.”
On the US panel show The View, Whoopi Goldberg defended Swift and said, “Just let her have her feelings. Don’t listen to music if you don’t like it.

Swift said that the music video for “Anti-Hero” showed her “nightmare scenarios and intrusive thoughts playing out in real time” in an Instagram post to celebrate its release. Swift has previously been candid in discussing her battle with an eating condition.
She claimed she would “starve” herself if she saw a photo where she felt her tummy was too big in her 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana, making her feel like she would pass out before or after live events around 2014. The third song on her new album Midnights, which was released last week to positive acclaim, is called Anti-Hero. It quickly shattered Spotify’s record for most albums streamed in a single day.
Throughout her life, she has experienced “13 restless nights interspersed throughout my record,” which she has referred to as “a trip through terrors and lovely dreams.” We’ve reached out to Swift’s representatives for comment.
