The corrections officer went into the cell and tried to wake the guy, but he was unconscious. According to Covelli, a prison officer radioed a medical emergency and requested an ambulance. The officer performed CPR and administered first assistance, including using an AED. The officers also gave the man CPR.
The paramedics from the Waukegan Fire Department came and took over treatment. Paramedics tried to save the man for a long time before declaring him dead. According to Covelli, the man arrived at the jail on Friday at around 2 a.m. He was apprehended in unincorporated Barrington for breaking a restraining order and taken into custody there.
Covelli added that although the individual was placed in a Pod 1 East double inmate cell, he was not given a cellmate. The individual was found unresponsive when Pod 1 East was under lockdown. Covelli claimed the inmate seemed “good” during rounds at least 30 minutes before the incident.
Multiple underlying health issues were present in the detainee. According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate’s body did not show unusual markings or injuries. On Monday, the Lake County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the body. After contacting the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office requested an impartial inquiry be conducted.
