Lake County Seeking Proposals For New Convention Center
Lake County officials are pushing ahead to introduce a new convention center. According to reports from The Times of Northwest Indiana, the Lake County Board of Commissioners has released a request for proposals (RFP) for this initiative.
This move comes approximately two months after a study commissioned by the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority revealed that a new convention center could bring in nearly $60 million annually for the local economy. Interested developers can submit their proposals to the commissioners by October 16.
During Wednesday’s board meeting, Commissioner Jerry Tippy expressed optimism about receiving several qualified proposals for review. He stated, ”I’m hopeful that we get a number of qualified proposals to review, and October should be an adequate amount of time for companies to put together proposals. I look forward to seeing what happens.'”
A law passed by the Indiana General Assembly and signed by Governor Eric Holcomb last year gives the county until June 1, 2025, to choose a developer.
According to the publication, Senate Enrolled Act 434 also allocates up to $5 million in annual state matching funds for the convention center project.
The study recommended constructing a 145,000-square-foot convention center with 73,000 square feet dedicated to meeting and exhibition space, including an 18,000-square-foot ballroom. The venue has the potential to create approximately 1,300 full-time, part-time, and temporary construction jobs, leading to an increase in state and local tax revenues by over $3.5 million per year, as outlined in the study.
The study also assessed 14 potential locations in Lake County for the project, identifying Patriot Park in Hobart as the top choice. Sherri Ziller, CEO of Northwest Indiana RDA, expressed her lack of surprise regarding this finding during an interview with Inside Indiana Business in March.
“They have the infrastructure already in place, which would significantly reduce costs. There’s no need for demolition. Mayor Josh Huddlestun has ambitious plans for that area, and it’s partially privately owned,” she explained.
“There are existing light industrial and retail facilities, as well as a sports complex. They aim to attract businesses like Topgolf, and there’s ample space for a convention center. It’s conveniently located near retail stores, restaurants, Chicago, public transportation, and a major expressway.”
According to the study, the second recommended site for the project is the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary. This is followed by Century Mall in Merrillville, the former Radisson at Star Plaza site in Merrillville, and the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and I-94 in Hammond.
The Times notes that following the RFP deadline, the commissioners are required to conduct a series of public hearings to assess the proposals. The county is mandated to commence work on the project by January 1, 2028.
