Man Hospitalized With Severe Injuries In Hot Anti-Freeze Mishap
Fire officials stated that a man incurred severe injuries after being scalded by hot radiator fluid from a car in Zion on Tuesday afternoon. The Zion Fire and Rescue Department promptly attended the scene around 3:15 p.m. at the junction of 21st Street and Gabriel Avenue following reports of a burn victim.
Battalion Chief Rocco Campanella of the Zion Fire and Rescue confirmed that paramedics discovered an adult male who had sustained burns from radiator fluid while working on a car. The incident occurred when the radiator cap was removed while the anti-freeze was still hot, resulting in burns to the man’s face.
According to Campanella, it’s crucial for people to understand the risks associated with removing radiator caps when the fluid inside is still hot. “I’ve witnessed this scenario several times, and it’s extremely hazardous,” he emphasized. In response to the situation, a LifeNet medical helicopter was summoned and landed nearby in the parking lot of Christ Community Church at 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive.
Campanella noted that although the man’s injuries were serious, they were not life-threatening. Subsequently, the medical helicopter transported him to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
