Police say that a Metro worker in Washington, DC, was shot and killed Wednesday morning while trying to stop a gunman from shooting commuters.

Police told the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority on Wednesday that Robert Cunningham, a mechanic in the power department, was the person who “stepped in to help a customer at Potomac Avenue Station and was shot senselessly.” Cunningham was identified as the person who “stepped in to help a customer”

At least two other people were shot and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, and police say a suspect has been caught. The shootings started on a Metrobus in southeastern Washington shortly after 9 a.m. ET Wednesday, when the gunman got into an argument with a man on the bus. Police say that when the two men got off the bus, the one with the gun shot the other passenger.

The gunman then went into the Potomac Avenue Metro Station, where police say he shot and hurt a second commuter. When the gunman pointed his gun at a woman on the train, Cunningham tried to stop him, but the gunman shot and killed him, police say. Investigators say the gunman then got on a Metro train, where people jumped on him and “were able to disarm” him. Police say that soon after, he was taken into custody.

Investigators have named Isaiah Trotman, 31, of Washington, DC, as the gunman. Police say he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed, kidnapping while armed, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

In a statement, the transit authority said,

“Metro is mourning the loss of a heroic employee.” “Words cannot express how saddened we are to learn about the death of Mr. Cunningham,” Paul C. Smedberg, chairman of the authority’s board, said. “We understand that the employee acted with extreme bravery to help a customer who was being threatened by the shooter. ”

Police say that a fourth person also got a hand injury during the incident.
