Major traffic backups have developed in the East Bay due to a fatal accident that occurred early on Wednesday morning on Highway 4 in Contra Costa County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred just before 4 o’clock in the morning and involved multiple vehicles in addition to a pedestrian.

A report of a collision in the highway’s eastbound lanes near the San Marco Boulevard off-ramp prompted the dispatch of law enforcement officers to the scene.

It is yet unknown how many vehicles were involved in the collision.

At this time, all lanes are shut on westbound Highway 4 near Bay Point at the intersection of San Marco Blvd., and the traffic backup is many miles long.

The traffic is backed up from Bailey Road in Bay Point to G Street in Antioch at six in the morning.
