A man who was arrested on Sunday, according to Salt Lake City Police, passed away in the hospital. Shortly after 3 p.m., police were summoned to a business around 300 West and 800 South after receiving a report of a man attempting to steal before departing. When police arrived, they located the guy nearby 350 W. 700 South and arrested him.

Sgt. Mark Wian of the SLCPD claims that the individual struggled with officers while he was being taken into custody. Two police officers reportedly suffered “severe” but non-life-threatening injuries. They were sent to a neighbourhood hospital to be examined. It was not immediately clear what exactly had injured them.

The officers then discovered that the victim had gone unconscious and unresponsive, according to Wian, and they tried to save his life by giving him naloxone. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to the police, where he later passed away.Wian claimed there were no gunshots heard during the incident.

The SLCPD established its “officer-involved critical incident” procedure, which covers situations in which law enforcement uses potentially lethal force (regardless of whether the person lives or dies) and when a suspect passes away while in custody. An outside police agency conducts an inquiry into these incidents. Within 10 working days following the incident, the officers’ body-worn camera footage is anticipated to be made public.

In a written statement published Sunday night, SLCPD Chief Mike Brown stated: “I want to reassure Salt Lake City that the officers in the Salt Lake City Police Department are qualified individuals who have vowed to safeguard our neighbourhood. Two of the police officers from our city suffered injuries during this incident.

I’m relieved that wounds weren’t more severe. The officer-involved-critical-incident protocol offers a free, open, and impartial procedure.” The SLCPD revealed bodycam video from an event when a woman died in the hospital weeks after her arrest, and months later, the medical examiner determined that her cause of death was homicide, this past week.
