American computer-animated sports comedy Cars was released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2006. It was created by Pixar Animation Studios. It was Pixar’s penultimate independently produced film following its acquisition by Disney in January 2006, and it was directed by John Lasseter from a screenplay by Dan Fogelman, Lasseter, Joe Ranft, Kiel Murray, Phil Lorin, and Jorgen Klubien and a story by Lasseter, Ranft, and Klubien.

It follows a hotshot rookie race car who, while en route to the biggest race of his life, becomes stranded in a run-down town and learns a few things about friendship, family, and the things in life that are actually worth waiting for. The story is set in a world where all of the people are anthropomorphic talking cars and other vehicles.

The Dinoco 400, the final race of the Piston Cup racing season, begins a competition between seven-time champion Strip “The King” Weathers, consistent runner-up Chick Hicks, who has resorted to forced collisions to go ahead, and skilled but cocky rookie Lightning McQueen. Lightning avoids a multi-car accident caused by Chick.

He stays out to take the lead, which backfires when his rear tyres blow out on the last lap. The King and Chick catch up, tying for first. The next week at LAIS will be the championship race. Lightning wants to win the race so he can leave Rust-eze, a bumper ointment company, and join The King’s Dinoco team. Due to his selfishness, he’s fired three crew chiefs and lost his pit crew after a race.

Lightning pushes Mack through the night to get to California quickly. Mack nods off while Lightning sleeps and is startled awake by delinquent tuner automobiles, leading Lightning to fall out of the trailer and onto the road. Lightning wakes up in traffic and searches for Mack. Instead, he ends himself at Radiator Springs, where he’s followed by the sheriff and ruins the main road.

The next day, Doc Hudson, the town judge and doctor, orders Lightning to leave the town upon seeing that he is a race car. The local lawyer, Sally, demands that Lightning be assigned community service to repave the road by machine, which Doc reluctantly agrees to. Lightning repaves the road quickly to get to California.

Doc challenges Lightning to a race with the condition that if he wins, he can leave. Lightning spins out on a corner and smashes into a cactus patch, losing and having to restart on the road. Lightning warms up to the town and befriends various citizens, including rusty tow truck Mater.

He falls in love with Sally, a Los Angeles transplant who wants to put Radiator Springs on the map. Lightning learns that Radiator Springs was formerly a popular Route 66 stop until it was bypassed by Interstate 40 and forgotten and that Doc was the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a three-time Piston Cup champion whose career ended in 1954.
