Phil McGraw, the contentious TV therapist of America, is ending as the king of daytime television. Dr. Phil will stop creating new shows after its 2023 season, CBS Media Ventures announced on Tuesday, following 21 years of dominating the ratings.
McGraw won’t, however, stray too far. According to the press release, the 72-year-old has plans to reveal a “strategic, prime-time relationship [with CBS Media Ventures], set for an early 2024 launch, which will strengthen his impact on television and audiences.” McGraw said he has “grave worries about the American family” and is “motivated to assist restore a clarity of purpose as well as our core values,” which is why he feels obligated to reach a wider audience.

Dr. Phil’ to End After 21 Seasons: The show’s host, Phil McGraw, will leave the program to pursue “new initiatives,” CBS Media Ventures said on Tuesday. The chat program has been airing since 2002 and is renowned for featuring guests with outlandish tales. Until the current 2022–2023 cycle concludes, new episodes will circulate.
Mr. McGraw is a former psychologist with a license. In the 1990s, he began his television career as a life counselor on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he became well-known among Americans. Then Ms. Winfrey assisted him in starting his program. Since then, Dr. Phil has guided various subjects, including parenting, mental wellness, and family relationships.
The program’s production firm, CBS Media Ventures, said in a news statement that Mr. McGraw had “been blessed with over 25 fantastic years in daytime television.” The 72-year-old claimed, “With this show, we have assisted thousands of visitors and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and childrearing. “This has been an amazing chapter in my life and career, but even though I’m leaving the day job, there is still so much I want to do.”
The production business stated that Mr. McGraw will concentrate on prime-time programming, with an early 2024 launch date, that “will expand his reach and increase his impact on television and viewers.” However, the news announcement did not explain Mr. McGraw’s new endeavorssid.

Buzzfeed, a US news organization, claimed in 2022 that current and past program participants had complained of “verbal abuse in a workplace that breeds fear, intimidation, and bigotry.” According to the Buzzfeed article, staff members complained about how guests with mental illnesses were treated unethically. Mr. McGraw and the show have refuted the claims made in that study.
