The super-antihero movie Black Adam, which comes out all over the world this week, is how Dwayne Johnson will join the DC Extended Universe. The first reviews of the action-packed extravaganza are out, and they say that the movie is neither the best nor the worst. Most people agree that the movie is exciting and fun and that Dwayne makes a great start in the superhero genre. However, the movie lacks depth and can get old quickly.
Black Adam is the story of how DC’s well-known antihero Teth Adam got his start (played by Dwayne). In the comics, he is a common enemy of Shazam and Superman. The movie shows him as a man who has been wronged and is angry. He sees destruction and violence as ways to get his own back. To stop him, people on Earth put together a group of heroes called the Justice Society. The actors, especially Dwayne, Pierce, and Aldis Hodge, who play Doctor Fate and Hawkman, have been praised in the reviews.
#BlackAdam is looking to make a global start with $135M this weekend, including a $60M domestic opening! 💵

Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geekly said this about Dwayne Johnson: “He gives one of his best performances. He gave everything he had to this role.” Ben Rolph of Discussing Film says, “Johnson keeps up his enchanting screen presence by delivering old-fashioned one-liners and brutal action with full passion.” In his review for Cinema Debate, Sheraz Farooqui also says nice things about other actors. “Brosnan is a natural fit for the role of Fate, and it’s surprising that he hasn’t been cast as a superhero sooner. It says, “Hodge is just as good in the movie.”
Other reviewers said that the movie is full of action and also has some geopolitical themes. “Its action-packed nature can be tiring, and some characters beg for more attention,” wrote Rachel LeBonte for ScreenRant. “But as an origin story for Teth-Adam, it succeeds in turning what viewers might have expected from Johnson’s first live-action superhero movie.”

Peter Debruge of Variety seemed less impressed with the movie in his review. He said, “The movie is basically Shane on steroids, set in the Middle East instead of the Old West, but still seen through the eyes of a young boy… Putting a kid in the middle of the story brings the whole thing down to a middle-school-level intellect.” The Wrap’s review of the movie was also mostly negative, with complaints about the casting and how often the action scenes happened. Alonso Duralde wrote, “Most disappointing of all, Black Adam is one of the most visually confusing big-studio superhero sagas, with CG that is so offensively ugly and fast-paced editing that takes all the excitement out of every fight scene.”
