Kate and Tully is a Teen
Teenage Tully returns home to find her mother Cloud (Beau Garrett) hosting a party with a number of her friends. Even after Tully receives a call from Cloud’s parole officer informing her that he is on his way to check on her, they all appear to have consumed excessive amounts of narcotics and don’t want to leave. Tully evicts all but one of Cloud’s friends with the help of Kate.

They pull him to a cupboard under the stairs and hide him there because he appears to be dead, or at least that is what they believe. They don’t believe Cloud will be prepared for her parole officer’s visit as the clock is ticking down, but she astounds them and manages it before deciding to go back to using drugs. Kate and Tully share a tender moment and make a promise to care for one another always. Then, they learn that Cloud’s pal is indeed still alive.
Career Life of Tully and Kate
A surprise visit from Johnny (Ben Lawson) occurs as Kate is getting ready to leave for a vacation with her new lover. He gets her some wipes for her glasses so she may escape with good vision. Kate is moved by the gesture and wonders Tully if it’s a hint that she shouldn’t travel to Europe.
She ponders whether Johnny still has feelings for her. Tully asserts that she thinks he is, but that their relationship is currently at a standstill because he is unable to provide her with marriage and a family at this time.
Tully claims that Johnny would have made a significant move if he had truly wanted Kate. The two friends then depart for the airport as a unit. Johnny arrives at their door after Tully and Kate have left and says (to himself) that he should have done something brave since he wants Kate to come back.
Thanksgiving in 2004 After the Accident
This Thanksgiving, Kate, and Tully aren’t getting along, so they make an effort to enjoy the occasion on their own. Spending the day with her family, Kate becomes tense whenever Tully’s name is mentioned.
After the substantial supper, Johnny approaches Kate in the kitchen and proposes that because they are back together, they get married again. She says she doesn’t want to destroy a wonderful thing, but she appears uncertain. She denies it when Johnny asks if she has a beef with Tully because of her opposition to the concept.
Kate finds her father Bud (Paul McGillion) dead on the couch as she tries to bring him some coffee, adding more sadness to her already difficult day. In the meantime, Tully makes a turkey for her and her mother Cloud in an attempt to channel her domestic side, but she fails spectacularly. In order to avoid his girlfriend’s family, Danny (Ignacio Serricchio) stops over, and the group decides to have pizza together.
2004: Bud’s funeral
As was shown in the Season One conclusion, Kate and Tully clashed at Bud’s burial. Tully then departs and makes her way to the house she shared with Cloud when she was a teenager. She looks around and thinks back on the past. In the meantime, Kate and Johnny discuss what transpired in their kitchen.
He apologizes for Tully’s unannounced arrival. Tully, according to her, tried to make it all about her. Johnny disagrees, admitting that Bud served as a father figure for Tully. Kate claims that she misses Tully and is tired of thinking about her. She believes, though, that she needs a new buddy “without 30 years of baggage.”
2005
Kate chooses to enroll in a class at a nearby college, where she makes a new buddy. They get close, although their relationship is not as strong as hers and Tully’s. Fortunately, Johnny makes life at home wonderful.
Tully improves her housekeeping skills, which she never mastered as a teen because her mother was so absent while rebuilding her old house. She extends an invitation to Cloud and Danny (along with his girlfriend) for Thanksgiving in order to showcase the home and her culinary abilities. She presents Cloud with the house’s keys as a gift.
Danny queries Tully about her dating life in private. She claims that she is becoming older. Just in case she’s interested, Danny informs her about a professor he knows who is filming a documentary about global warming and is looking for a celebrity ambassador.
Being the first Thanksgiving since she lost her father, for Kate it is bittersweet. Kate’s mother gently notes during dinner that Tully has been renovating her old house across the street. The topic is immediately changed by Kate.
When Kate returns to school, she tells her new buddy in the restroom that one of her nipples has been really itchy and red. Her buddy is obviously uneasy as she begins to lift up her shirt, so Kate stops her. One day outside, Kate and her companion pass Tully, Danny, and the professor he mentioned. Tully and Kate exchange sorrowful glances but don’t say anything to one another.
Tully immediately accepts the assignment after speaking with the professor; it will involve her spending many months in an isolated facility in Antarctica. Danny speculates that Tully must have found it difficult to see Kate. Although they hug in the elevator, Danny’s girlfriend is outside on the next floor, thus the hug ends there.
2005 Christmas
A year later, while Johnny and Kate are putting the finishing touches on their Christmas tree, he asks Kate to marry him with a ring. Finally, Kate consents to marry him once more. The first person she wants to contact is Tully, but she chooses to call a school friend instead and doesn’t get the joyful response she was hoping for.
Danny calls to say he will miss Tully and brings heated gloves for her trip to Antarctica. Tully reveals to Danny that she designated him as her emergency contact for the journey, which is significant because she previously served as Kate’s emergency contact.
Kate also hears about a diagnosis
Kate visits the doctor to get a severe rash on her breast examined. She has been identified as having a rare, aggressive kind of cancer (stage 3), and doctors advise that she should begin treatment right now.
