Statement from Janice, Cal and Hannah McNair on the passing of Jamey Rootes
Jamey Rootes, who was the first team president in the history of the Houston Texans, died on Monday night at the age of 55, his wife said on social media.
Melissa Wildgen Rootes wrote on Facebook that her husband had died on Sunday in Houston after “a battle with mental health issues.”
“Jamey was known for how much he cared about his family and friends, but he was also the President of the Houston Texans until 2021, when he stepped down. Jamey was a dedicated Houstonian who loved his city and changed the lives of so many people through his work in business, school, and charity. Our family asks for privacy and will not answer questions from the media.”
She said in the end, “Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 right now if you or someone you care about is thinking about suicide or having a health crisis.”
Rootes has been with the Texans for 20 years. The late owner Bob McNair hired him as team president in 2002, the same year the Texans played their first NFL game. He left his job in February 2021, and the current president, Greg Grissom, took over in March.
In honour of Rootes, McNair’s wife, Janice, son, Cal, and daughter-in-law, Hannah, all made a joint statement.
“We are very sad to hear that Jamey Rootes, the former president of the Houston Texans, has died,” the statement said. “Jamey ran our business for 20 years, and he was always committed to Houston and the Houston Texans. We appreciate his steady leadership and the many things he has done for our team. During this very hard time, our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Jamey’s wife, Melissa, and their two children.
After his time with the Texans, Rootes became the CEO of the MLS team Houston Dynamo and the NWSL team Houston Dash. He stayed in those roles for 18 days before stepping down in July.
Before joining Houston, the Clemson graduate worked for four years as the president and general manager of the Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew.
