As a biographical crime thriller, Netflix’s “Monster: the Jeffrey Dahmer Story” gives audiences a terrifying look into Dahmer’s mind and details his horrific crimes between 1978 and 1991. The show also depicts Jeffrey’s connection with his parents, Lionel and Joyce Dahmer, and recaps events from his early life.

Reports claim that Joyce Dahmer’s heavy medication use drove a wedge between her and her husband, despite her efforts to be an excellent mother to their son. But if you’re curious about the circumstances surrounding Joyce’s death, you’re lucky because we have all the details you need.

How Did Joyce Dahmer Die?

Joyce Annette Flint, the daughter of Floyd and Lillian Flint, was born on February 7, 1936, and she spent her formative years in the Wisconsin city of Columbus. They had settled in Milwaukee hoping for a bright future and had recently married, but it is unknown when exactly they exchanged vows.

Joyce and Lionel’s marriage flourished in the early years, and on May 21, 1960, they welcomed their first child, Jeffrey Dahmer. It was simply Joyce’s lot in life to be prescribed medication while she was carrying Jeffrey.

Joyce, it was reported, became increasingly reliant on them over time. Although she did her best to be an excellent mother to Jeffrey as he was growing up, Lionel claimed that she became a “hypochondriac” and avoided contact with Jeffrey out of fear of infecting him. Joyce later denied that things had worsened after her second pregnancy, but Lionel insisted they had.

Lionel insinuated that during Joyce’s second pregnancy with David, she became utterly reliant on prescription medicines like Equanil, laxatives, sleeping pills, and morphine. Lionel stated that Joyce’s usage of such prescribed pharmaceuticals was far from typical, saying that she often took them in enormous amounts despite her claims that they were meant to calm her down and take away her agony.

Joyce maintained her innocence while Lionel expressed concern for their child, and the two eventually drifted apart. Due to their divergent opinions, Jeffrey often sat in on arguments between his parents. It’s no surprise that the boy’s psyche would be influenced by such a situation at home and that he spent much of his time alone in class.

David was born to Joyce, and her relationship with Lionel had reached an all-time low while he was perfectly healthy. Joyce and David tried their hardest to save their marriage, but when their problems became insurmountable, they chose to split up. Joyce was awarded custody of David after the couple’s divorce was finalized on July 24, 1978; Lionel was granted visitation rights.

He must also provide spousal support to his ex-wife. Lionel eventually wed Shari, a woman who would become pivotal in Jeffrey’s story. After her divorce, Joyce settled in Fresno, California, where she worked as a supervisor in the elder care industry in the 1980s. But in 1991, she made a career change, and now she oversees the Central Valley AIDS Team, which treats people in the Fresno area who have HIV/AIDS.

After Jeffrey’s arrest, Joyce allegedly made multiple trips to Milwaukee to see him. When the Hicks family sued Lionel and Shari for wrongful death after Steven’s death in 1992, she was named as a defendant along with them. Furthermore, after Jeffrey was fatally struck with a hammer in 1994, she fought her ex-husband to have her son’s brain investigated. The legal battle was lost, and Jeffrey was cremated as per his desires.

According to reports, after Jeffrey’s conviction, Joyce made a failed suicide attempt before succumbing to breast cancer on November 27, 2000. Joyce was still living in Fresno, California when she passed away, and she will be remembered for her dedication to helping others living with HIV/AIDS.
