Katie Meyer was a soccer star at Stanford. She killed herself earlier this year. On Wednesday, her parents sued the school for wrongful death.
The lawsuit says that when Meyer, who is 21 years old, got an email from Stanford’s Office of Community Standards about possible punishment, she was very upset. In August 2021, Meyer was said to have spilled coffee on a Stanford football player accused of sexually assaulting one of her teammates on the soccer team. The lawsuit says that the coffee incident was reported to the Office of Community Standards, which looked into it.
Meyer’s family says that in the spring, the OCS sent her a six-page email warning her that, among other things, she could lose her diploma. The goalie’s family says she wanted to go to Stanford Law School after she graduated.
“Stanford employees didn’t help Katie when she said she was sad. She was “terrified that an accident will ruin my future,” and she had “been scared for months that my clumsiness will ruin my chances of leaving Stanford on a good note.” She also had a lot of “anxiety” about the OCS Process, according to the lawsuit.

Meyer was found dead in her dorm room shortly after receiving this email. It was ruled that she killed herself.
“The lawsuit says that Stanford’s after-hours disciplinary charge and the careless way it was given to Katie caused Katie to have an acute stress reaction that led her to commit suicide on the spot. “Katie killed herself without planning to and because of the shocking and deeply upsetting news she got from Stanford while she was alone in her room and had no help or support.
A spokesperson for Stanford University, Dee Mostofi, said in a statement that the Meyers’ lawsuit claims are invalid.
“We strongly disagree with any claim that the university caused her death. Even though we haven’t seen the Meyer family’s formal complaint yet, we know that some of the claims in it are false and misleading,” Mostofi said.
