It was a great pleasure to meet with Irene O’Malley, Executive Director of Lake Cares Inc. Food Pantry.

Lake Cares Food Pantry opened on April 4, 2009, with a short-term intention of helping those in the community who were affected by the economic conditions of the time. The goal was to serve 25 families a week, today they serve more than 200 families a week, and the numbers keep growing.

The Food pantry distributes between 8,000 to 10,000 lbs of food

per week, in 2016 they distributed over 365,000 lbs. In the first quarter of 2017; 7,596 individuals, 2,332 families and 97,912 lbs of food have been served. Irene said the number of families being served has not diminished over the years and has actually increased as community awareness grows.

How do they do it? Currently there are over 175 volunteers supporting the efforts of the Food Pantry. “We are continually looking for more volunteers, as the needs of the Lake County Community grow.” , states Irene. Collection efforts, distribution efforts, drivers, donors and sponsors all work together for the betterment of a great cause. It’s amazing, a simple $5.00 donation can purchase up to 27 lbs of food.

One thing I found very different was that the Food Pantry offers CHOICES… working and distributing by appointment only allows the organization to personally sit down with every individual/family to see exactly what there needs are, what they will eat and what they will not eat. Providing people with items they will not use is a waste, a waste that can not be afforded. Everybody and every family has different needs, Irene told me it’s “All about the people”.

The Lake Cares Food Pantry needs your help. They need the help of sponsors and donors. I encourage you to donate your time, or j
