Created by Saverio Costanzo for HBO, RAI, and TIMvision, My Brilliant Friend (Italian: L’amica geniale) is a coming-of-age drama series broadcast in Italian and Neapolitan. The whole literary work, titled after the first of Elena Ferrante’s four Neapolitan Novels, will be transformed into four eight-episode seasons. The series is a collaboration between Umedia and Fremantle, two international film studios, and four Italian production firms (Wildside, Fandango, The Apartment, and More).
Two episodes premiered at this year’s Venice International Film Festival, the 75th. The first season premiere aired on HBO on November 18, 2018, and on Rai 1 and TIMvision on November 27, 2018. The second season, titled My Brilliant Friend: The Story of a New Name (in Italian, L’amica geniale – Storia del Nuovo Cognome), was confirmed in December 2018 and will air on Rai 1 on February 10, 2020, and on HBO on March 16, 2020. Lenù (Mazzucco) is in a bind in the season 3 finale. Throughout this season, we’ve seen her struggle in her marriage to Pietro Airota (Matteo Cecchi), as the distance between them (due to Pietro’s passivity and inability to treat her as an equal) widens, allowing her to begin an affair with Nino Sarratore (Francesco Serpico), whom she’s loved since elementary school.
Before Pietro brought Nino back into Lenù’s life, she hadn’t seen him since he chose Lila (her BEST FRIEND) over her, got her pregnant, and then abandoned her. Despite all that misbehavior and betrayal, Lenù still finds herself drawn to the philandering cad (also married). He certainly seems drawn to her now that she is a successful published author and (not quite happily) married.
Lenù gets a taste of the passion and intellectual respect her marriage with Pietro lacks. In contrast, Nino gets a taste of the power and rush from sneaking around with a unique, brilliant, and unavailable woman.
They both seem to convince themselves that this is love. Lenù understands she wants out of her troubled marriage, but when she advises they tell their wives the truth so they can finally be together, Nino balks, forcing Lenù to break things between them then and there. Nino tells his wife about the affair, jeopardizing his marriage so he might live a fantasy with Lenù. She tells Pietro so she may be with the man she’s loved for so long, and he… does not react well.
Pietro compels Lenù to inform their two young girls about her affair, leaving Dede (Sofia Luchetti) and Pietro in tears and bewilderment at her words (including her vow to return from a trip with Nino in five days). Lila (Grace) phones Lenù to tell her Manuela Solara (Imma Villa) has been murdered, triggering discontent, terror, and violence in her community.
So, she sends Gennaro (Salvatore Tortora) to be with Lenù and her family. Lenù says she can’t since she’s leaving to be with Nino, and Lila is naturally unhappy. She tells Lenù that Nino will exploit her until he abandons her, calling her an idiot before hanging off. Nino still wears his wedding ring when they board the plane for a romantic holiday, and neither of them looks happy.
Lenù smiles when she sees an older version of herself (Alba Rohrwacher) in the bathroom mirror. Season 4 is promised and in the works, so expect excitement, drama, friendship, romance, heartbreak, and everything in between. Enjoy My Brilliant Friend Season 3 for now.

The Rai 1 Channel has not yet provided an update regarding their plans for the television show “My Brilliant Friend.” Considering the previous release schedule, however, the most likely date for the release of the fourth season of My Brilliant Friend is the 26th of February, 2023.
