Year-over-year, software unit sales rose 1.8 percent to 235.07 million units. Compared to the previous fiscal year, when the March 2020 release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a major driver of hardware sales in the first half, this fiscal year’s hardware sales decreased, owing to issues such as continuing shortages of semiconductor components and other parts.

Following its launch in October 2021, the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model had a strong start, and the Nintendo Switch family as a whole had steady sales. In terms of software, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, both released in November 2021, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus, released in January 2022, each sold more than 10 million units. In addition, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, an evergreen title, maintained its outstanding sales.

As a result, annual software unit sales for Nintendo systems were the biggest they’d ever been. On a year-over-year basis, digital sales increased by 4.5 percent, accounting for 42.6 percent of overall software sales.

However, compared to the fiscal year 2020, net sales fell 3.6 percent this year, and operating profit fell 7.5 percent. In FY 2021, royalties increased, but sales in the mobile sector fell by 6.5 percent. Nintendo predicted that 21 million Nintendo Switch hardware units would be sold in the coming fiscal year. Nintendo anticipates selling 210 million games on its platform.

In terms of the Nintendo Switch, we’ll continue to promote the attraction of all three hardware types in order to keep the momentum going and grow the install base. In terms of software, we’ve scheduled global releases of Xenoblade 3 (July) and Splatoon 3 (August), in addition to Nintendo Switch Sports in April (September).

Furthermore, the latest Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be released in late 2022. Other software publishers intend to provide a diverse range of products, and we intend to boost sales by combining existing popular titles with a steady stream of new releases.
