FLORIDA’S APOLLO BEACH — A 5-year-old boy accidentally shot himself on Thursday morning, according to authorities, and a Florida man was detained as a result. Aston Simmons, 28, reportedly drove the young patient to the hospital after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call on Thursday shortly after 8 a.m. about a child who had accidentally shot himself.
According to WFLA, deputies entered the home and smelled marijuana but could not find a gun. After obtaining a search warrant, deputies discovered that the child had accessed an “unsecured, loaded gun” in a bedroom. According to the HCSO, deputies allegedly found some cash and marijuana inside the home, which they also seized along with other “drug paraphernalia.”
There is never a situation where a child should have access to a gun. A 5-year-old child is currently fighting for their life due to this man’s careless actions. Please keep him in your prayers as he fights for his life, and know that the negligent person who started this destruction has been detained and will be held accountable, according to the news release from Sheriff Chad Chronister. According to WFLA, the child is currently in critical condition and has serious injuries.
Simmons and the child are not related, according to HCSO. The child’s name won’t be made public, though. Additionally, investigators have kept Simmons’ connection to the child a secret. Simmons is accused of several offenses, including improper firearm storage and marijuana possession with the intent to resell, according to HCSO.
