Police in eastern Raleigh, North Carolina, reported that the shooting on Thursday left five individuals dead, among them an off-duty police officer.
Two people were transported to the hospital, one of whom was a Raleigh K9 officer who was later released after suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Lt. Jason Borneo, a spokesman for Raleigh police, revealed during a news conference on Thursday night that the other victim is in severe condition.
“Terror has come to our doorstep this evening. Raleigh has become the nightmare of every town, the governor declared at the press conference. It has been committed in a pointless, horrifying, and infuriating act of violence.
Shortly around 9:30 p.m., the suspect was placed into arrest, according to Borneo. Police described the suspect as a young White male. They did not provide any other information.
According to Borneo, the incident started at 5 p.m. in the Hedingham neighbourhood close to the Neuse River Greenway. The pursuit of the suspect by the authorities lasted for several hours.
More than a dozen rescue vehicles were lined up on a road that ran through some woods, as shown in helicopter footage from CNN affiliate WRAL-TV.
An “unending stream of police” reportedly passed by the Hedingham Golf Club driving range, according to a woman who was there.

She told CNN that “a golf pro came out to advise us to shelter inside or leave ASAP.” Despite their apparent calmness, I immediately sensed a problem, so we immediately departed.
Officers were “on the scene of an active shooting in the area of the Neuse River Greenway at Osprey Cove Drive and Bay Harbor Drive,” according to a tweet from the police just before six o’clock.
Police issued a warning to homeowners at about 8:30 p.m. to stay indoors “until further notice.”
Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin described the current situation as “a terrible and awful day for the city of Raleigh.” “Raleigh needs all of us to work together right now. Those members of our community who have endured tragic losses require our assistance. a loved one passing away. Both the family of the police officer who was shot and the police officer who was slain need our support.
Numerous local and state law enforcement agencies, including the Charlotte Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are supporting Raleigh police (ATF).
A visibly upset Baldwin expressed her desire for no other mayor to ever experience a similar circumstance.
We need to put an end to the senseless gun carnage in our nation, she said.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 531 mass shootings in the US so far this year, including the one that happened in Raleigh on Thursday. A mass shooting, according to the organisation and CNN, is one in which at least four persons are shot, excluding the shooter.
