Mr DeSantis has won re-election overwhelmingly in Florida. We should be happy for him. But the governor, who is still looking through the keyhole of a 2024 presidential campaign, said that his win changed the way politics work. If Mr DeSantis, Mr Rubio, and others threw open the doors where they celebrated their wins and looked at the landscape outside of Florida, they would see that the political dogs they used to get votes in Florida didn’t do so well outside of Mr DeSantis’ fiefdom. Outside of Florida, MAGA, election deniers, “culture warriors,” “anti-science and anti-fact” advocates, “voter suppression” candidates, “political crudeness,” and “Jan. 6 participants and supporters who were against democracy” did not win.
Mr Trump is the founder of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement. Now, even his former state media arm, Fox “News,” is attacking him for choosing loyalist losers the general public doesn’t like. Republicans should be warned that everything is always about Mr Trump. So, the political scene hasn’t changed much (at least outside of Florida), but people have finally realised how dangerous the “burn down the house” plan is.

Mr DeSantis kissed Mr Trump’s ring not too long ago as part of his Faustian deal to become governor of Florida. By doing this, he showed that he was likely to think that integrity was unnecessary. Because his MAGA wolf in sheep’s clothing strategy has worked so well in Florida, Mr Trump and other people now see him as a possible opponent for Mr Trump in 2024. The fact that Mr DeSantis is now getting the middle finger from the same hand that held the ring he once kissed proves the old saying that there is no honour among thieves or sly politicians. It also is no surprise that his former mentor is accusing him of election fraud and threatening to reveal his secrets. Strangely, Mr DeSantis hasn’t shown the same moral and physical courage in his response to Mr Trump that he did when he threatened to “throw that elf across the Potomac” when he was talking about the famous but small Dr Fauci. I don’t think we’ll see that courage from him soon. Instead, he’s more likely to join Ted Cruz, Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, and others who have let Mr Trump humiliate them in public at the cost of their own dignity to keep their political power. It is a twist on the Bible saying, “Gain the world, lose your soul.”
What does this mean for the future of Florida voters, who have put their faith in MAGA, Trump, and DeSantis? Maybe Florida voters haven’t given much thought to the things they worship for a long time. It is instructive for all of us to remember that the devil, metaphorically speaking, always comes to collect.
