Authorities revealed Wednesday that two fishermen have been charged with stuffing fish in an effort to win thousands of dollars in an Ohio fishing contest last month. According to the prosecution, a Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted the potential tournament winners, Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky, on one count each of cheating, attempted grand theft, possessing criminal instruments, and illegally keeping wild animals.
According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley, “I take every crime very seriously, and I believe what these two people attempted was not only dishonourable but also criminal.” After it was determined that Runyan and Cominsky’s fish were filled with lead weights and fish fillets, they were disqualified from the Lake Erie Walleye Trail competition.

This event was captured in a number of social media videos. They would have collected roughly $29,000 if they had been named the event’s winners. Prosecutors claim that the tournament’s director discovered 10 weights within the fish, including several walleye fillets and eight 12-ounce and two 8-ounce weights.
The director, Jason Fischer, previously admitted to CNN that when one team’s fish weighed nearly twice as much as he anticipated they would at the Cleveland championship weigh-in, he became immediately suspicious. When Fischer felt the fish and then cut one up with a knife, he discovered what he claimed to be a lead ball. He had heard the crowd complaining and had personally questioned the figures.
The competitive fishing world has been shocked by the cheating controversy when a video of the discovery went viral. Authorities confiscated Cominsky’s fishing tournament boat and trailer on Tuesday, according to the prosecution. Neither Cominsky nor Runyan responded to CNN’s earlier requests for comment, and it wasn’t immediately clear whether each guy was represented by an attorney.
