KEARNS, Utah, November 20, 2022 (Gephardt Daily) — After an alleged kidnapping attempt on Saturday night in Salt Lake County, which started at a Kearns property close to 4300 West 5300 South and ended with a traffic stop close to 5400 South and Bangerter Highway, three males are in arrest.
The defendants were detained after 911 operators received a complaint that a woman had just been kidnapped by three guys trying to recoup a purported narcotics theft of 500 grammes of heroin, according to an affidavit provided by a Salt Lake County sheriff’s detective.
The woman was saved during the traffic stop; Gephardt Daily hides her name to protect her identity. She claimed to have taken drugs from another drug dealer with her male partner on Saturday night when they were at a friend’s house in Kearns when three suspects showed up and said they had been recruited to do so.
The woman reportedly told her captors that “she did not know anything about any stolen drugs,” according to court documents, but they insisted on payment, claiming that “if they couldn’t recover the drugs, then they needed to be paid what their employer would have paid them for the recovery of the drugs.”
Additionally, the group threatened to “smoke” the man and woman if they didn’t leave the house with them.
According to the probable cause statements, the woman offered the males $380 in cash and the title to her 2020 Jeep. She told police they took the money, which was all in $20s, but they rejected the Jeep title. They continued to push, according to the woman, that she or her partner accompany them “to avoid additional conflict” and out of a sense that she “didn’t have any other alternative.”
According to arrest records, the boyfriend contacted 911 as soon as the kidnappers and the girlfriend left and said that two males in a white pickup truck and a white passenger car were responsible for the kidnapping.

“In the end, patrol officers caught up to the cars coming down Bangerter Highway from 5400 South. They stopped the cars after pursuing them. APS Jared Bowers, Daniel Roberts, and Dwight Messick were detained.
Charges against Messick and Roberts state that Bowers was discovered to have $380 in $20 bills in his pocket.
According to police, a cooperating witness claimed to have been there when Bowers received a call from an unnamed individual accusing the pair of robbing a heroin supplier.
The APS “planned a scheme to convince the victims they had a tracker on their car and were being dispatched by the persons they stole from to recover the drugs,” according to the (helpful witness).
Messick, according to the female victim, “was very aggressive throughout the entire encounter, but the other 2 APs were calm. She did mention that if they didn’t accompany them, the APS threatened to “smoke them.”

A first-degree felony is aggravated kidnapping.
Online jail records don’t include any charges against Bowers.
