Variety game shows That’s My Jam, which will feature celebrities competing in music-themed challenges similar to those featured on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, was given a 10-episode order on March 13, 2019. After the 2020 Summer Olympics conclude, the series hosted by Fallon (his first primetime series for NBC) will begin. The announcement came on January 11, 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the Olympics had to be moved to 2021, and NBC had already planned to screen other content following the medal ceremonies.

The Voice’s celebrity contestants are also the coaches in the first episode (the series will return to its usual Monday timeslot on January 3), with Blake Shelton and Ariana Grande leading Team One and Kelly Clarkson and John Legend leading Team Two. The four fiercely competitive coaches square off on the huge stage for charity and the show’s silver boom box awards.

They play games such as “Perfect Mashup,” in which one team member is given the lyrics of one song and the melody of another, and the other team member has to get the other to guess the band without using the band’s name, and “The Vinyl Countdown,” in which one team member is given the name of a band, and the other has to get the other to guess the band without using the band’s name.

Of course, the success of the show will depend on the celebrities who take part in it; Fallon and company made a good choice by including coaches from The Voice in the premiere episode, and not only because the singing competition airs earlier that night. Working together for so long (except for Grande, who has just been a coach for a few months), and being so naturally competitive on their show, the coaches have developed remarkable camaraderie. It was hilarious to witness Shelton poke fun at the program, Clarkson gets really into each game, and Grande says she was sorry she didn’t know some of the songs or facts since she was too young.

And the fact that all four competitors have impressive singing voices is played up throughout the competition is a major plus (yes, even Blake, if you like country). At one point during their round of the Wheel of Impossible Karaoke, Grande and Clarkson were trading verses from different songs by pop divas. You knew they could both pull it off (Kelly even does “Kellyoke” on her talk program), and they did so magnificently.

While there are games on So That’s My Jam, the show is more accurately described as a variety show. With that perspective, the fact that there are no “civilian” candidates who could stand to win a significant amount of money is less of a deal breaker. But if any of the groups has duds, which Fallon and his producers are generally skilled at spotting, the broadcast will suffer.
